     Personality

Cassius is very quiet and reserved about most things, especially his own feelings. He mostly expresses himself to Pokemon he's trying to train, and even then only to express what he wants out of them. He is quick to express frustration with things not going his way, whether because of others, his own fault, or simply accidents. However, he is also quick to apologize for those outbursts, despite his tone of voice in those cases mostly being very curt and snippish. Most of the time, it's simply because he doesn't want bad blood between himself and his companions.

He's very scared about verbally expressing care for people, no matter what his actual feelings are. However, he does express it in a smaller way, constantly checking on the people he cares about to make sure they're still there. Currently, that's pretty much just his new companions, who he has found himself caring about simply due to the fact that they keep trying to get through to him.

Cassius has quite a few subjects that bring up painful memories for him, but he also dislikes mentioning that they make him uncomfortable. He doesn't want to share any more about his past than necessary, so most of the time when those subjects come up, he'll simply end up making himself scarce, and most of the time won't be found for a long time. Most of the time, he will end up organizing his gem collection while waiting for everyone else to stop talking.

Cassius does actually miss his parents and homeland a lot, but he's chosen to try and bury those memories. However, at times, he can still find himself staring at his Ranger outfit or the box that holds his gem collection, and can't help but reminisce a bit.

     Background

Cassius is the son of Vern Craine, a high-ranking Pokemon Ranger, and Nira Craine, maiden name Tyr, a spelunker. The two of them met while Vern was on a ranger mission, investigating a disturbance in a certain cave system. When he got there, he found that Nira had bumped into the poacher the Rangers were looking for, and was beating him up with her walking stick, an Absol snapping at the man's heels. Vern stepped in to arrest the man, and Nira thanked him a bit grudgingly before collapsing, her Absol crying out in worry and pawing at her side.

Vern handed the poacher over to some other local authorities before taking Nira to the hospital. It turned out that the hospital was fairly familiar with her, since the young woman had been sickly from birth. When she awoke, she once again reluctantly thanked him for helping her out. The two of them ended up talking for a while, and he told her about his ranger job. She told him that she had been hiking and searching for gems ever since her youth, and that she was also searching for a sign from the legendary Terrakion, who she had seen once in a dream. For her, that belief was what sustained her in her long journeys. Usually, Aria the Absol would watch out for her and warn her if she was about to collapse, but upon finding the poacher, Nira had been enraged enough to go at him without any care for her own safety.

Vern offered Nira an opportunity to join the rangers and become an official patrol assistant, but she refused, saying that she preferred having the freedom to explore her beloved caves and mountains as she wished. However, after that, the two of them started meeting up more often, including outside of Vern's normal patrol times. Finally, some of Vern's Ranger compatriots started teasing him about his "dates," and that made him realize that he had fallen for Nira. And on their next date, he expressed those feelings, which Nira realized she returned. The two of them continued their dates, and eventually ended up married.

Cassius was their only child, as it turned out to be a very difficult birth for Nira. Although his parents were often away, they lavished much attention on him as he grew, and he longed to be like them when he grew older. He grew up on stories of his father's adventures as a Ranger and his mother's explorations into the mountains, and her stories about Terrakion. His father even promised him to get him into the Ranger School once he was old enough. So he did his best to learn about the wilderness and surviving in it, hoping to have a head start once he got in.

He did get in, but while he was still a student there, his mother fell ill once more, this time a much more severe attack than previously that left her permanently in the hospital. She repeatedly told Cassius not to worry, to focus on his studies, and he tried to keep doing that for as long as he could. However, his father then took leave form his Ranger duties in order to take care of her, and Cassius' own concern took over, making it much harder for him to focus on his studies.

Finally, he took his own leave to visit his mother in the hospital. She was too tired to even pretend to be upset, and expressed happiness that he had come to see her. He couldn't believe how weak she looked now, and he stayed for as long as he could. Before he left, he told both her and his father, who had come to visit, that he loved them.

The next day, he learned that his mother had had a burst of energy and left the hospital, taking only her Pokemon with her. According to his father, she had gone in search of Terrakion one last time, saying that she would find either death or a healing at the end of it. A few days after that, his father also disappeared with his Pokemon, saying that he wanted to find her if she was out there. Neither of them returned. Cassius tried to go on, but now everything about his homeland held nothing but painful memories. Finally, he set off for the docks, hoping to find a ship to take him far away from his homeland. That was where he first encountered Celandine, Cassius, and Nessarose.
